Tai Chi and Low Back Pain in Young Men

Published on July 12, 2014 by Tai Chi Acupuncture & Wellness Center

This study was designed to examine the effects of tai chi on low back pain in young males. Forty men in their 20s with low back pain were randomly assigned to two groups. Tai chi was applied to one group, and stretching was applied to the other group. The subjects conducted exercise for one hour, three times per week for four weeks. There were significant differences between the two groups in measured pain and spinal muscle activity. The tai chi group experienced less pain and less muscle activity (i.e., greater back stability). Tai chi can be considered an effective method to reduce low back pain in men in their 20s.
